Norco Interior promotes sustainability by reusing shop interiors

For Norco Interior, it is a matter of course to actively engage in the environment and sustainability. The market for recycling is growing steadily, which means that materials and products get a second chance instead of ending up in the landfill.

Norco Interior is at the forefront of circular thinking and has developed a service to recycle shop interiors. A "reverse web shop" where the customer puts in store furnishings that they want to send back, in order to contribute to the possibility of giving it new life in another store.

Although a circular way of thinking feels natural and right in our hearts, it is not always easy to apply it in reality. Nor to get it into the production chain. Renovation of existing shop furnishings requires adaptation and you need to be innovative to find creative solutions for functional reuse. In a world where clothing companies have already started launching platforms for second-hand clothing, Norco has taken the step to extend the same concept to store interiors. An efficient process has been found to handle and care for used store furnishings to give it new life and a second chance in a new store.

Store interiors gain new value - that's how the service works

Let's say you have a store in a chain that is going to close. Your shelves and spears are perhaps a little worn but fully functional and could be given new life and reused in a new store. In Norco's app, you fill in the number of each variety to be sent back for reuse. You can choose whether Norco will take care of the logistics of packing and sending the interior, or whether you want to do it yourself. Once at Norco's warehouse, the store interior is checked, perhaps it needs to be repainted or supplemented with new parts. The store interior is refurbished and then it is posted in the web shop again under refurbished.

Now another shop that needs shelves and spears can click this home in the web shop. A service that is particularly suitable for chains with several stores. An existing store may need some additional parts, while a newly started store needs new furnishings for the entire store.

Partner in sustainability

However, Norco Interior does not only help with the physical work of taking down, renovating, packing, delivering and assembling store furnishings.

We are happy to come up with ideas when it comes to choosing materials and designing interior design that has sustainability in focus, says Henrik Janzen, Head of Digitization at Norco Interior.

The company has worked actively with sustainability for a couple of years. When it comes to production and transportation, our gasoline-powered cars have been replaced by electric cars, solar cells have been installed in our factories, and we think more actively about which materials and suppliers we choose. We see an increased demand for sustainable shop furnishings and we constantly try to develop our offer, says Henrik.

Can you reuse all shop furnishings?

Wall furnishings and floor furnishings are particularly suitable for reuse, and in terms of materials, metal wears out less than wood, for example. A wooden cash desk can get a whole new life by changing the front or top. Sound absorbers and acoustic panels are often grateful to be reused by preserving and dressing the wooden frames.

Today's interiors are often created to be as flexible as possible and with standardized solutions it is possible to reuse and improve with small means, such as painting or redecorating, says Henrik.

Recycling is the future

Different stores have different lifespans for their store furnishings. Some concepts have a lifespan of a full twelve years. Others have predetermined that they change every three years as part of a concept to renew themselves. This means store furnishings that can be taken apart and put to good use for someone else.

This is already done in the motor industry, when you drop off your car at the workshop, you can get a repaired part instead of a new one, says Henrik. He is convinced that the circular thinking will develop more over time. Especially when the industry learns to manage the process and find routines.
